What is Counseling?
Counseling also known as therapy, psychotherapy, or talk-therapy, is when someone seeks to begin a process by which the client meets with a therapist to talk about issues that are bothering them. Many people come in for a specific reason, such as anxiety or depression, but people also come in just to talk, to vent, or to speak with someone who can maintain an objective perspective.
The process of counseling may include, but is not limited to:
Helping you to resolve personal issues
Education concerning the root of personal difficulties
Learning and applying new skills
Rejecting destructive ways of thinking and behaving
Gaining knowledge and insight concerning personal motivations
Working through issues of woundedness and unforgiveness
Learning to develop healthy relationships with yourself or others
Counseling may also incorporate the use of techniques from a variety of therapeutic approaches such as Insight Oriented, Object Relations, Congnitive Behavioral, Psychoeducational, EMDR, as well as the application of your personal faith principles.
How long is a session and how often should I see my therapist?
Sessions for counseling are usually 50 minutes and specialized therapy such as EMDR can be 90 minutes. The number and frequency of sessions vary on a case-by-case basis – some clients come to see us multiple times a week, and some visit once a month. This will be discussed during your initial session. Often people start out at once or twice a week, and as their symptoms are alleviated, they will visit every other week or once a month. We decide together on a schedule you feel comfortable with.
