Esthetician Lindsey Holder Explains How to Get Clear Skin

No one likes acne—that’s for sure. But as many people who have turned to harsh drugstore products for clear skin can tell you, red, peeling and irritated skin is not a pretty sight, either.

However, there’s another solution. From teenagers to adults in their twenties, thirties and beyond, as well as pregnant women going through hormonal changes, many people are turning to acne facials to zap zits stat. Why? Because it works.

facials can help you get great skin

At Greenville Natural Health Center, our acne facial includes deep cleansing, exfoliation, extractions and a mask, using organic ilike products that are great for your skin. A high frequency treatment is also used to infuse oxygen into the skin. Bacteria can’t live in oxygen, so the “life” of the blemish is reduced—fast!

I recently spoke with our esthetician, Lindsey Holder, to find out about the effectiveness of acne facials and, super importantly, what you can do at home to maintain stellar skin.

GNHC: Acne can be frustrating to deal with, so results are key. What kind of results can be expected from acne facials?

LH: A consistent monthly facial is key to seeing results. Visiting your esthetician monthly allows for them to note the progress, see how the products are reacting and learn about your daily skin care habits. Also, extractions can be difficult to remove for most people and can scar the skin if not done properly. A licensed esthetician has the advantage of viewing your skin through a magnifying lamp, able to scope out skin concerns you might have not been aware of otherwise.

GNHC: As an esthetician, I’m sure you’ve seen it all when it comes to skin care. What are some blemish-causing blunders you’ve come across?

LH: The top contender is dry skin! This is usually from over exfoliating and using products that are too drying.

GNHC: Sadly, we can’t visit you every day! So what can acne-prone folks do at home to get gorgeous skin?

LH: Your esthetician does about 20% of the work (in a month’s time) and the client does 80% at home to see results. Skin needs to be taken care of daily with the proper products and protocol. I pride myself on not only making it a priority to give relaxing facial experiences, but also educating my clients on how to take care of their skin. Ilike is my organic product line of choice. I use it daily on all clients, as well as on myself.

GNHC: A huge blemish cropping up on an important day can be super inconvenient, even embarrassing. What damage control can be done at home?

LH: An esthetician is judged by her face everyday, so an unsightly blemish is the worst! Personally, I immediately apply tea tree oil to the area for anti-bacterial purposes and to dry it out slightly. I avoid putting moisturizer over the blemish until it vanishes, as well. The 7 Herb mask from ilike is also a lifesaver on blemish days. After using the mask, my blemish is reduced a good 80% the next day.

GNHC: Wow. That’s impressive!

GNHC: It’s no secret that makeup can clog pores, but is wearing makeup always a recipe for breakout disaster?

LH: This is a hotly-debate topic, but I avoid mineral oil in my makeup. Coating the skin and not allowing to rid itself of toxins can’t be good in my book! There are great natural and mineral makeup options on the market these days that sit on the surface of the skin, not penetrating to deeper levels. Tarte and Korres both have excellent natural tinted moisturizers and foundation selections.

  3. I know pregnant women are not to ingest raw eggs but is it safe to apply topically to the face to treat acne?

    Thank you!

    • Hi Diane,

I asked Dr. Marina about this, and she said that, generally speaking, she wouldn’t suggest putting raw eggs on your face if you’re pregnant because things are different when you are pregnant and have to be extra careful in general.

You can still treat acne with natural skincare, though!

      I hope this helps!
      Katie

    • Hi Diane and thank you for your question. I do not recommend this since you are dealing with raw eggs. Try using a clay or mud mask weekly (double check ingredients) using a non-alcoholic toner is helpful in getting extra impurities as well. And don’t forget to exfoliate (one to two times weekly will do. Thanks!

  4. Yes, ilike has a great antibacterial mask called the Seven herb mask which is amazing for acneic skin!
